"No!" three voices chorused the single word together, with Ewan's the loudest.

"You are too valuable to be a pawn, Zara," Essie said, shaking her head. "Your marriage to Hayden baffled many fae. Evander abides by ancient customs, and he prefers to isolate his kingdom not just from the humans but the rest of our community. Agreeing to marry his heir to a shifter... it is an odd move unless he has ulterior motives."

I had a feeling I knew Evander's "ulterior motives". Marsha recognized my true identity. She realized I was eternal. I didn't need a crystal ball to tell me Evander, like Marsha and Hayden, put a lot of stock in the prophecy.

Of course, I said none of that.

Zach opened and closed his mouth several times, but no words came out. He busied his hands by tying and untying the ribbon on his mask. This was a lot for my brother to digest on top of the stress from the past three months, and I feared he might break under the pressure. He'd said no when I offered to trade myself to Evander, and yet he loved Brooke. I saw it in his eyes and felt it in my heart.

"There are other ways to go about this." Essie's gaze panned the room, stopping at each of us. "There is something else Evander wants desperately."

I considered her words. Only one thing came to mind.

"You mean Hayden, don't you?" I asked.

Essie nodded. "Find the prince." Her eyes swung to Zach. "Then you will have the leverage to negotiate Brooke's return."

"You want us to locate Hayden and convince him to come home?" Confusion made Zach's brows knit together.

Ewan and I, however, were on the same page.

"We aren't asking nicely," he said, jaw set in a hard line. "Once we find him, we take him."

"As a political hostage," I clarified, because my brother still didn't seem to catch on. "Evander will trade Brooke for his heir." I turned to Essie. "How long before she marries Warren?"

"Two weeks from tomorrow."

That wasn't a lot of time to chase down a wayward prince.

I looked at my brother. "When are you supposed to marry the Aquarius girl?"

"Her name's Serenity," Zach said. He made a bow with the mask ribbons. "I guess we picked a popular date. Our wedding is also two weeks from tomorrow."
